Corrosion Engineering and Metal Corrosion Testing Services

Corrosion is a phenomenon leading to exorbitant losses of materials, energy, and money by causing degradation of products, materials of construction, equipment, and necessitating increased maintenance.  This leads to unplanned shutdowns and may even result in serious accidents.

Fretting corrosion

Fretting corrosion refers to corrosion damage at the asperities of contact surfaces. This damage is induced under load and in the presence of repeated relative surface motion, as induced for example by vibration. Pits or grooves and oxide debris characterize this damage, typically found in machinery, bolted assemblies and ball or roller bearings. Contact surfaces exposed to vibration during transportation are exposed to the risk of fretting corrosion.

Cavitation Corrosion

The corrosion of metals and alloys almost never follows a single law nor is governed by a single mode. Even the simplest situations can lead to the corrosion of a material by a combination of modes driven by intertwined mechanisms.

Stress Corrosion Cracking

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is the cracking induced from the combined influence of tensile stress and a corrosive medium. The impact of SCC on a material usually falls between dry cracking and the fatigue threshold of that material. The required tensile stresses may be in the form of directly applied stresses or in the form of residual stresses.

Exfoliation corrosion

Exfoliation corrosion is a particular form of intergranular corrosion associated with high strength aluminum alloys. Alloys that have been extruded or otherwise worked heavily, with a microstructure of elongated, flattened grains, are particularly prone to this damage.

The Intergranular Corrosion

The microstructure of metals and alloys is made up of grains, separated by grain boundaries. Intergranular corrosion is localized attack along the grain boundaries, or immediately adjacent to grain boundaries, while the bulk of the grains remain largely unaffected.

Pitting Corrosion

Pitting corrosion is a localized form of corrosion by which cavities or "holes" are produced in the material. Pitting is considered to be more dangerous than uniform corrosion damage because it is more difficult to detect, predict and design against. Corrosion products often cover the pits. A small, narrow pit with minimal overall metal loss can lead to the failure of an entire engineering system. Pitting corrosion, which, for example, is almost a common denominator of all types of localized corrosion attack, may assume different shapes.

Erosion Corrosion

Erosion corrosion is an acceleration in the rate of corrosion attack in metal due to the relative motion of a corrosive fluid and a metal surface. The increased turbulence caused by pitting on the internal surfaces of a tube can result in rapidly increasing erosion rates and eventually a leak. Erosion corrosion can also be aggravated by faulty workmanship. For example, burrs left at cut tube ends can upset smooth water flow, cause localized turbulence and high flow velocities, resulting in erosion corrosion. A combination of erosion and corrosion can lead to extremely high pitting rates.

Foiling Corrosion Involves Outsmarting Metals' Nature

Iron, used to make steel alloys, is more stable as an oxide than as a metal. In the corrosion process, iron oxidizes in the presence of water, yielding Fe2+ ions. The Fe2+ ions, meanwhile, react with hydroxide ions in the water to make Fe(OH)2, or "green rust," which reacts with oxygen in air to form Fe(OH)3—what we commonly recognize as rust.
