A major issue is often overlooked in light of the drastic statistics on deterioration of library archival holdings: important historical objects in libraries and archives, i.e., documents, illuminated manuscripts. colored prints and maps suffer very serious damage as a result of the destructive effects of iron gall inks and are therefore acutely endangered. |

Rust Doctor
Rust paint is non-toxic; quick & easy to use
Rust Doctor is a water based latex paint that allows you to paint over rusty metal and then topcoat with any kind of paint without the need to sand or grind to bare metal. This unique product chemically converts the rusty metal to black magnetite, which is a very hard form of iron oxide. Because magnetite is inert (will not react with moisture and oxygen), it creates a protective layer that keeps the metal from rusting. In addition, a latex primer is left on the surface, allowing for topcoating with any kind of paint. In one simple step, the rust is converted to magnetite and the surface is primed. |

Corrosion Doctors, Metallurgical Consultants
Uniform or general corrosion is typified by the rusting of steel. Other examples of uniform corrosion are the tarnishing of silver or the green patina associated with the corrosion of copper. |

Galvanic series relationships are useful as a guide for selecting metals to be joined, which will help the selection of metals having minimal tendency to interact galvanically, or will indicate the need or degree of protection to be applied to lessen the expected potential interactions. In general, the further apart the materials are in the galvanic series, the higher the risk of galvanic corrosion, which should be prevented by design. Conversely, the farther one metal is from another, the greater the corrosion will be. However, the series does not provide any information on the rate of galvanic corrosion and thus serves as a basic qualitative guide only. |

For corrosion prevention in concrete repairs, the most common installation is to tie small, puck-shaped galvanic anodes to the reinforcing steel at regular intervals around the perimeter of the repair. |

Bilt-Hamber Laboratories produce innovative proprietary rust removers that are non-toxic, biodegradable and extremely effective. These rust removers overcome the considerable risk to the user of toxic mineral acids. Whilst mineral acids such as hydrochloric acid are effective at corrosion removal they also liberate corrosive gases which accelerate damage to any unprotected material around the area of treatment. Deox-Gel is a viscous, highly thixotropic, rust remover, designed for corrosion removal on surfaces. |

The Industry Standard for Zinc-Nickel Alloys Due to increasing expectations of consumers the automotive industry is required to offer extended vehicle warranties. Improvements in corrosion protection are becoming increasingly important for hot zones, such as underhood applications, where traditional zinc has limited performance. |

Zinc Alloy Plating: Superior Corrosion ProtectionImprovements in corrosion protection are an important consideration for many of today’s industrial applications, where the use of traditional zinc coatings are not possible because of its limited performance capabilities. Zinc alloys provide increased corrosion protection over zinc. The use of alloys has developed because of the need to extend component service life through enhanced coating properties. |

Metal components undergoing continuous and/or intermittent exposure to corrosive salt environments, caustic solvents, thermal shock conditions and/or extreme temperatures from -375° F to 1200° F (-226°C to 649°C) are often excellent candidates for SermeTel protection. The coatings are extremely ductile, and can withstand the pressures of most industrial processes without cracking or peeling. They are also unaffected by oils, greases, fuels, hydraulic fluids and similar materials. |

Corrosion Source
Metals and alloys are composed of grains similar to sand grains in a common sandstone. Intergranular corrosion refers to the selective corrosion of the grain boundary regions. This attack is very common in some stainless steels and nickel alloys. Some aluminum alloys can also exhibit intergranular and exfoliation (i.e. corrosion at grain boundary sites parallel to the metal surface where corrosion products force apart the metal). |

In recent years it has also become an increasingly common special requirement for special grades for their resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion to be verified by testing in ferrichloride, CPT and CCT tests respectively. |
